Chambers announces his decision not to run in local elections

Newport Fianna Fáil councillor Frank Chambers has announced that he will not be contesting the forthcoming Mayo County Council elections on June 5, despite having received the Fianna Fáil nomination for the Westport electoral area. Cllr Chambers made the announcement at a meeting of the Michael Kilroy Fianna Fáil Cumann.

Population decline in the county lambasted

Councillor Frank Chambers said that Mayo County Council and all elected members have failed Mayo in not preventing the continuing population decline in north Mayo and on the islands. Proposal for allocation of funds to Inishturk

During the first sitting of Mayo County Council on the island of Inishturk for over 18 years, Fianna Fáil Councillor Margaret Adams this week proposed that a special grant of approximately €20,000 per annum be allocated from Mayo County Council to the islands, including Inishturk, as part of a special development fund, on the condition that 20 per cent of the total amount be funded locally.

Mayo county councillors racked up more than €800K in six months

Figures released by Mayo County Council under the Freedom of Information Act have revealed that Mayo county councillors were paid out €836,212 from January to the end of June 2009, all relating to the six months pre-election. Independent Castlebar Councillor Frank Durcan who sought this information said that these figures are “immoral in the times that are in it”.
